Impossible for Liverpool to replace Gerrard, admits Rodgers.

Gerrard thanked an emotional Anfield crowd after making his final appearance in front of the Kop on Saturday, but hopes of a fairytale ending were shattered as Crystal Palace ran out 3-1 winners.

The 34-year-old is joining MLS outfit LA Galaxy this summer after a 17-year professional career on Merseyside that has yielded every major honour bar the Premier League, and Rodgers admits his captain will leave a monumental void.

"I have always said he is a player and a person who is irreplaceable with the standard he has set and what he has done here," Rodgers told reporters. "We will have to plot a way to improve in the summer, and that is our challenge.

"In my time here, we have lost a couple of players in Jamie Carragher and Steven Gerrard. Those two players in the Premier League years here have been monumental.

"Throw in a world-class player like Luis Suarez and of course it is difficult, but we will rise to the challenge.

"He got a wonderful send-off and did everything right until the very end. The support he got was absolutely brilliant and what they would expect of him. He has been a wonderful player and gave his all for the club. It was fantastic for him and his family."

DU kweli kazi ipo: Everton 1-1 Manchester City.

Steven Naismith's late equaliser ensured that Manchester City fell two points behind Chelsea in the Premier League title race after being held by Everton at Goodison Park.

Manuel Pellegrini's defending champions entered the match level with the Blues at the Premier League summit and Fernandinho's 74th-minute header appeared set to preserve that state of affairs.

Yet Joe Hart, who had earlier made a pair of fine saves from Romelu Lukaku, came needlessly from his line and allowed Naismith to convert Leighton Baines' free-kick four minutes later.

City's slick passing game clicked instantly into gear as they dominated for long periods of the first half, although wasteful finishing from Stevan Jovetic and Jesus Navas threatened to undermine them before Everton full-back Seamus Coleman clattered the crossbar from distance.

A more even second half followed and a buoyant Goodison Park crowd was delighted to see Naismith end a worrying slump for manager Roberto Martinez.

John Stones made his first Everton start since Boxing Day at centre-back with Antolin Alcaraz (suspension) and Sylvain Distin (groin) unavailable, while Aiden McGeady was preferred to Kevin Mirallas.

Captain Vincent Kompany and top scorer Sergio Aguero returned to the City bench following injury lay-offs as Yaya Toure's Africa Cup of Nations absence meant Fernando partnered Fernandinho in midfield.

David Silva posed early problems in front of the Everton defence and City's Spain playmaker threaded a pass for Jovetic to blast over in the ninth minute.

An error from Phil Jagielka gave Silva the chance to craft a clearer opening but Navas side-footed wastefully wide.

Everton spurned promising free-kick opportunities as Lukaku and Baines drove into defensive walls, but City remained on top in open play – Jovetic twice off target from the edge of the area having linked smoothly with Silva.

Pellegrini's team arguably over-played when pinning Everton back under sustained pressure and they almost paid two minutes before the break.

Hart stood firm to deny Lukaku and Coleman crashed a swerving left-footed strike against the crossbar to conclude the attack.

Those near-misses spurred Everton on during the opening exchanges of the second half, with Lukaku's powerful forward play to the fore.

The Belgium international stormed beyond Eliaquim Mangala in the 57th minute to draw a second excellent stop from Hart.

With City lacking a similar presence in attack, Pellegrini turned towards Aguero in favour of Jovetic with 24 minutes remaining.

Jagielka had the ball in the net in the 69th minute but Naismith was penalised for a foul on Hart, while Aguero teed himself up to volley goalwards at the other end.

Silva was predictably involved when City broke the deadlock – Fernandinho heading past Coleman on the line when his team-mate's deflected shot looped in his direction – yet their advantage was short-lived.

Baines arched in a fine free-kick from the left but Hart's decision to come for the cross was rash and Naismith nodded home, leaving City to ponder a two-point deficit at the summit as they prepare to host Arsenal next weekend.

FT: Manchester City 3-0 Crystal Palace.

David Silva scored twice as Manchester City beat Crystal Palace 3-0 to move level on points with Premier League leaders Chelsea.

The Spain midfielder struck twice in the second half on his 200th appearance for the club at the Etihad Stadium on Saturday, as the champions stretched their winning run to eight games in all competitions.

City had been toothless in the first half, with James Milner employed in an unfamiliar advance role in the absence of all of the club's recognised strikers due to injury.

They raised their game after the break, though, and Silva delivered the end product they had previously been lacking with two goals in the space of 12 minutes, before Yaya Toure added a third goal to cap another impressive display.

In the end a routine afternoon for Manchester City, though for 45 minutes it looked as if their lack of a striker was going to see them frustrated in front of their own fans.

David Silva provided the key to unlocking the Crystal Palace defence, and though he needed a deflection to open the scoring, his knowledge of playing in a system without an out-and-out frontman was plain for all to see. Without Sergio Aguero, his role in the side becomes even greater, and on this evidence he is more than ready to carry that burden.

For Palace's part, they battled bravely, but once Yannick Bolasie was shackelled they had very little to offer in the final third. Neil Warnock will no doubt be looking for a striker once the transfer window opens in 12 days.
Victory for Manuel Pellegrini's men - their sixth in succession in the top flight - ensures they join Chelsea on 39 points, with the latter facing a trip to Stoke City on Monday.

Palace were unfortunate to have a James McArthur goal disallowed for offside after Silva's second goal and Neil Warnock's team have now won just one of their last 11 games.

Pellegrini made six changes to the side that won at Leicester City last weekend, with Milner among the players to come in, while Fraizer Campbell replaced the injured Marouane Chamakh in the Palace starting line-up and Jason Puncheon was preferred to Wilfried Zaha.

Warnock said his Palace side had nothing to fear at the Etihad Stadium and they made a positive start as City struggled to get going.

Yannick Bolasie proved a real threat early on and Joe Hart did well to palm away the winger's cross as the onrushing McArthur was poised to finish from close range.

Mile Jedinak ought to have headed home an inviting corner, before Campbell spurned a great chance to open the scoring when Bolasie headed the ball on and the former Manchester United striker failed to hit the target with an acrobatic overhead kick.

City started to get into their stride with some slick passing and movement, but Silva was unable to make Julian Speroni work after Samir Nasri had burst into the penalty area and cut the ball back to the Spain midfielder.

Bolasie shot into the side-netting 10 minutes before the break as City continued to look vulnerable at the back.

Pablo Zabaleta then came agonisingly close to putting the home side in front when Toure picked him out with a sublime pass and the marauding defender scooped the ball over Speroni, but his effort was just wide.

It was a frustrating first half for the champions, but they were in front four minutes after the break courtesy of a strike from Silva.

Zabaleta was the architect, with the right-back again surging forward and unselfishly cutting the ball back for Silva, whose shot hit Scott Dann and looped into the far corner of the net.

Palace were struggling to live with City's passing and movement and Silva doubled their lead 61 minutes in, sweeping the ball home first time after Aleksandar Kolarov had picked him out with a fine cross.

The visitors had the ball in the back of the net after 66 minutes, but McArthur was wrongly adjudged to be offside after he headed home a fine cross from the impressive Bolasie.

Toure added to Palace's misery with nine minutes remaining when he fired a powerful left-footed shot past Speroni after receiving a fine pass from Milner following a swift break, as City marched on in ominous fashion.

Unaambiwa FULL TIME Manchester United 3-0 Liverpool: Rooney & Van Persie.

Manchester United's resurgence continued on Sunday as rivals Liverpool were easily beaten 3-0 at Old Trafford on Sunday.

The visitors threatened through Raheem Sterling during the opening stage, only for Wayne Rooney to give his side the lead with his first shot on target, before Juan Mata headed in a second five minutes before the break.

Sterling continued to be Liverpool's brightest spark in the second half, coming close to rounding De Gea before feeding substitute Mario Balotelli to test the goalkeeper with a fierce drive that was tipped onto the crossbar.

But United put the result beyond doubt when Dejan Lovren's poor clearance saw Mata feed Robin van Persie and convert into an empty net.

Roma 0-2 Manchester City: Nasri & Zabaleta send visitors through.

Samir Nasri inspired Manchester City to a 2-0 Champions League win at Roma and qualification from Group E.

A dramatic Sergio Aguero hat-trick in the 3-2 win over group winners Bayern Munich last time out had kept City in the hunt for the second qualification place, despite a largely lacklustre campaign.

And despite their talisman's absence with a knee injury on Wednesday, Manuel Pellegrini's team recovered from a shaky start at the Stadio Olimpico to produce their most assured European performance of the season against a Roma team that lacked ideas in attack.

By contrast, Nasri buzzed inventively throughout for City and his wonderful 60th-minute effort cannoned home off the upright.

A post came to City's rescue 11 minutes later when Joe Hart got a decisive fingertip onto Kostas Manolas' header and, with Bayern beating CSKA Moscow 3-0 in Germany, their progress to the knockout stages was confirmed when Nasri set up Pablo Zabaleta to score a second four minutes from time.

Former England defender Ashley Cole was unable to win a place in Roma's matchday squad, while experienced midfielder Daniele De Rossi was only named as a substitute.

Edin Dzeko led the City attack as Aguero began his recuperation - the Argentine forward leading a high-profile list of absentees that also included Vincent Kompany (hamstring) and Yaya Toure (suspension), while David Silva returned to the visitors' bench after a knee problem.
A nervy opening for Pellegrini's defence continued as Radja Nainggolan burst down the left channel and Eliaquim Mangala made a vital clearance with Gervinho poised to convert.

James Milner had a low 20th-minute drive pushed away by Morgan De Sanctis but Hart produced an even better stop from Gervinho when Roma sprung forward immediately on the counter-attack.

Dzeko lacked conviction when he stabbed a shot over under pressure after fine interplay between Nasri and Jesus Navas, and the latter then crossed for the Bosnia striker to glance wide in the 29th minute as City grew into the contest.

The lively Gervinho shot wastefully at Hart having raced through on an increasingly rare Roma attack and City responded, with De Sanctis out quickly to deny Milner after Nasri's 39th-minute pass.

Hart kept Miralem Pjanic's long-range strike out of the bottom corner in the 58th minute amid a cagey opening to the second half that was soon interrupted by Nasri.

There appeared to be little on when the Frenchman drifted in from the left flank but he whipped a shot past the sprawling De Sanctis and in off the near post.

Nainggolan forced Hart to push a rasping shot over at the other end before the in-form Adem Ljajic turned Zabaleta inside out prior to blasting off target in the 67th minute.

It was becoming an increasingly accomplished night for Hart as he did just enough to deny Manolas, although Martin Demichelis came to his goalkeeper's rescue from the resulting corner - clearing off the goalline.

Roma poured forward in search of the two goals they needed to go through at City's expense late on, but that meant gaps at the back and when Nasri calmly rolled a pass into Zabaleta's path with four minutes left, the marauding right-back settled the issue.

Howard: Martinez destined for World Coach of the Year crown.

Everton goalkeeper Tim Howard has hailed his manager Roberto Martinez as a "genius" and believes the Spaniard is destined to one day be nominated for the Fifa World Coach of the Year award.

The candidates for this year's prize were announced on October 28, with Germany coach Joachim Low tipped to win after his triumph at this summer's World Cup in Brazil. Martinez, an FA Cup winner in 2013 with Wigan Athletic, led Everton back to qualification for European football last season and Howard believes it is just a matter of time until his manager's work is recognised. "I saw the list and thought 'one day his name will be on there'," he told Goal.

"He's phenomenal. He's literally a tactical genius and it's brilliant to work with him." Also among this year's nominees is Howard's USA coach and Low's predecessor Jurgen Klinsmann, who the 35-year-old believes is well worth his place on the list after guiding the Americans to the World Cup knockout stage. "We think he's a fabulous coach," Howard said. "We're lucky to have him.

It's very rare to see a coach with that type of longevity in the international game. "He's had four years now; we're looking at another four and that would be really good. I think the continuity of the squad is brilliant so I'm excited to see his name up there.

"It's a testament to what we as players have been able to do on the pitch." Howard and Everton are back in the UEFA Europa League for the first time since 2009-10 and have begun their campaign well alongside Wolfsburg, Lille and Krasnodar in a difficult Group H. "It's great,"

Howard said at a event to promote Western Union's #PassForSchool campaign. "Every team strives for that every year and very few teams make it.

"The fans love it. They love to travel. They love those home games under the lights. "We relish it as players because you're playing in a top European competition. There's more games, you get the energy and the buzz of those big crowds and travelling and playing different teams. For us, we seem to really enjoy it." Despite the heightened workload this season, with Everton playing on six Thursdays before an intense Christmas schedule in the Premier League, Howard says that Martinez is managing the resources at his disposal well. "The manager's brilliant in terms of monitoring and managing cycles of games," he added. "So when we have European games and then a Premier League game that bookends it it's not a surprise to anyone. He gives us lots of rest. "Our training sessions are mapped out according to our energy levels so we have a really, really good plan in place. The manager and the staff are meticulous in trying to plan that." Everton overcame Lille 3-0 at Goodison Park on Thursday night to take a commanding lead in their group and Howard says that Martinez is not taking the competition lightly. "Without question, it's a priority," Howard declared. "What the plan was once we qualified for Europe last year was to get players in the door in the summer of quality so that we could rotate the squad, so we don't fizzle out and get tired. "But also be able to change and win games. Not just to change to keep things fresh. We've done that and [manager Roberto Martinez] seems to really feel that this is a competition we can do really well in."

Unaambiwa its Full Time Manchester United 1-1 Chelsea.

Didier Drogba powered home a trademark header early in the second half but Branislav Ivanovic's red card gifted RVP the chance to level in injury time in a dramatic finale
Even in a rebuilding season, Manchester United retain the ability to make an afternoon at Old Trafford a tortuous experience. Chelsea return to London with their unbeaten record intact but a bitter taste in their mouths after Robin van Persie snatched a point for the hosts in a finale reminiscent of the Sir Alex Ferguson era.

Louis van Gaal reverted to the classic Fergie playbook, seeking to embroil the Premier League leaders in a battle and assail them down the flanks. Marouane Fellaini produced the best performance of his short and troubled United career to stifle Cesc Fabregas, yet Chelsea still looked like winners when Didier Drogba stole in at the near post to head home the Spaniard's pinpoint corner.

United, however, appear to have recovered the spirit they lost under David Moyes, pressuring Branislav Ivanovic into a rash challenge that led to a second booking and a free-kick that yielded Van Persie's chaotic equaliser.

Much was made before this match about the friendship between Van Gaal and Jose Mourinho, and the truth is that when the dust settles, neither will be too unhappy. United have the biggest result of their brave new dawn, while Chelsea are unbeaten and done with Manchester for the season.

Unaambiwa ni Full Time; West Ham 2-1 Manchester City, Pellegrini haamini kilochotokea.

West Ham survived a late onslaught to claim a famous win over Manchester City at Upton Park on Saturday.

Goals in each half from Morgan Amalfitano and Diafra Sakho put Sam Allardyce's in-form side in control against an below-par City, only for a brilliant individual effort from David Silva on 77 minutes to set up a grandstand finish.

Manuel Pellegrini's men threw everything at West Ham in the closing stages, but a heroic rearguard action - marshalled superbly by James Collins - ensured West Ham ended a five-and-a-half-year wait for a victory over City.

The result means West Ham now sit just one point adrift of second-placed City, for whom the result represents a blow in their efforts to keep pace with table-topping Chelsea.

Allardyce claimed in the build-up that this game represented West Ham's best opportunity to end their winless run against City, due to the combination of his team's good form and the champions' midweek exertions in Europe, when Pellegrini's side drew 2-2 at CSKA Moscow.

And so it proved, as City struggled to cope with West Ham's energetic pressing game - exemplified by nobody better than on-loan Barcelona midfielder Alex Song, who was outstanding throughout.

It was no surprise when Allardyce named an unchanged XI from last week's 3-1 win at Burnley, and the hosts - who have now lost just one of their last six Premier League games - looked full of confidence from the off.

Unsurprisingly, it was Sergio Aguero who provided City's early attacking threat, with the elusive Argentinian dropping deep to run directly at the heart of West Ham's backline.

The likes of Silva and Yaya Toure were struggling to assert their usual influence for City, though, and West Ham were rewarded for their solid start when Amalfitano rounded off a superb team move after 21 minutes.

Much has been made of Allardyce's excellent business in the transfer window, and it was three of his new recruits who combined to break the deadlock after 21 minutes.

The impressive Enner Valencia showed his searing pace in latching onto a perfectly weighted pass from Song down the right, before cutting back for Amalfitano to convert from no more than four yards.

Clearly buoyed by the opener, West Ham upped the tempo of their game and could have doubled their advantage on the stroke of half-time, only for Collins to narrowly fail to connect with Amalfitano's low cross after a brilliant set-piece routine.

West Ham picked up where they left off after the break, with Stewart Downing and Sakho threatening Joe Hart's goal.

But, as the home side's intensity inevitably dropped, City - and Aguero and Toure in particular - sparked into life.

Aguero forced Adrian into a superb save on the hour, before inexplicably missing the visitors' best chance of the game, as he struck the bar from six yards after Toure's driving run through the middle ended with Jesus Navas cutting back to the striker.

Toure himself then rattled Adrian's bar, and that narrow miss proved costly as Sakho headed home his sixth Premier League goal of the season from Aaron Cresswell's deep cross to seemingly give West Ham an unassailable lead with 15 minutes to go.

Silva had other ideas, though, as he jinked in from the right, beat four West Ham defenders before curling an unstoppable shot beyond Adrian from 18 yards.

City laid siege to Adrian's goal thereafter, with Toure firing into the side-netting in the 90th minute and Stevan Jovetic forcing the goalkeeper into another save, but West Ham held firm to secure a deserved three points.

Gerard Pique has issued an apology for his angry tirade towards police for ordering his brother Marc to pay a fine for a car parking violation.

The defender was involved in a dispute with officers in the early hours of Monday morning, but now acknowledges he over-reacted to the situation

Gerard Pique has issued an apology for his angry tirade towards police for ordering his brother Marc to pay a fine for a car parking violation.

The Barcelona defender returned home following Spain’s victory over Luxembourg in the early hours of Monday morning, where he met his sibling in the Port Olimpic area of Catalonia.

Police then approached the pair and slapped Marc, who was driving the car, with a fine for stopping in a bus lane, prompting the Spain star to react in furious fashion.

Spanish newspaper SPORT reported that Pique had accused police of being jealous of his fame and targeting him because of his wealth.

He is then claimed to have threatened to contact the bosses of the police on duty, before taking the parking ticket and throwing it at their accusers in disgust.

However, Pique has since seen the error of his ways and issued an apology via his official Twitter account, but added that his comments had been twisted by the media.

He said: "They've exaggerated what I said, but, in any case, I'm sorry, I made a mistake and it won't happen again.”

The episode adds to a growing list of controversial incidents involving the former Manchester United man, following his apparent support of Catalan independence.

Pique posted a picture of himself on Twitter last month with son Milan celebrating Catalunya's national day - 'La Diada' - and followed up with another tweet on September 11, when an estimated 1.8 million Catalans took to the streets in a march for the right to vote for independence from Spain.

"I have never seen anything like it. Simply unforgettable," the defender wrote in Catalan to his following of more than 9.5m on the social networking site. He was quickly bombarded with responses from furious fans demanding he write in Spanish, while many more called for his retirement from the Spain side.

The 27-year-old has also found his place in the Barcelona starting XI under threat following the summer signing of centre-back Jeremy Mathieu, who has often partnered Javier Mascherano at the heart of the back four .
