The visitors threatened through Raheem Sterling during the opening stage, only for Wayne Rooney to give his side the lead with his first shot on target, before Juan Mata headed in a second five minutes before the break.
Sterling continued to be Liverpool's brightest spark in the second half, coming close to rounding De Gea before feeding substitute Mario Balotelli to test the goalkeeper with a fierce drive that was tipped onto the crossbar.
But United put the result beyond doubt when Dejan Lovren's poor clearance saw Mata feed Robin van Persie and convert into an empty net.
