Bernhard Ruf, head of the clinic’s department for infectious diseases, said the patient suffered from a “very severe course of the disease” and the clinic’s hygienic measures were performed at the “highest level” to protect the hospital’s health care workers and the environment. The clinic safely destroyed all medical material contaminated with Ebola, he added.
The body of the deceased will now be cremated due to safety reasons, a spokeswoman for the city’s mayor said.
The patient has been the third Ebola fatality in Europe after two Spanish missionaries, Brother Manuel García Viejo and Rev. Miguel Pajares, died in September and August, respectively.
The hospital will issue a more detailed statement later in the day.
The Sudanese had been the third Ebola patient to be brought for treatment to Germany. The first patient, treated at a hospital in Hamburg, has recovered and returned home. The second patient, a Ugandan doctor, arrived for treatment in Frankfurt on Oct. 3.
Germany has around 50 hospital beds to treat patients infected with Ebola. Nine hospitals, including in the cities of Düsseldorf, Frankfurt, Leipzig, Munich and Stuttgart, have special isolation wards that deal with highly contagious diseases. Protection
